Trainee Marine Engineers

The marine engineering cadetship sets you up with the knowledge and skills you need for a life at sea as a qualified Engineering Officer. You’ll operate and maintain the cutting edge technology equipments including the mechanical systems such as engines, ventilation systems, navigation and communications equipment, deck fittings like cranes, hoists and landing craft.

You will be heavily involved in the day to day safety of the ship. All crew need to work as a team to keep the ship and its equipment at optimum efficiency.

There is diverse role and everyday is different, with your ultimate goal to become the Chief Engineer of your own vessel. You’ll be ranked according to your experience and qualifications and with each grade comes more responsibilities. As an officer cadet you will start at the bottom and work your way up.

Chief Engineer:

  • Overall authority for planning engineering tasks and delegating them to staff. Will assist the Captain in the management of the ship and will be in charge of al things technical.

Second Engineer:

  • Day-to-day supervision of the ship’s engineering team and coordinate between the Chief Engineer and the rest of the team in fulfilling objectives.

Third Officer:

  • Assisting the Second Engineer and looking after the mechanical systems and machinery. Responsible for all watches.

Fourth Officer:

  • Carrying out general machinery maintenance. Ans responsible for all engineering machines and equipments up keep.

Engine Cadet/ Trainee Marine Engineer:

  • Primarily a Trainee Engine Officer who assists and learns hand-on procedures of various job functions on board under the supervision of senior Officers and primarily the Second Engineer. Responsible for all watches and will learn about engine room equipments and their maintenance.

To undertake the Deck Officer course you require a minimum 60% marks in Maths, Physics and Chemistry in your Class XII with English as a subject. The B Sc Nautical Science recognized by the DG shipping or the HNC/D qualification recognized globally and awarded by MCA, UK. comprises of three years of study, two of which is spent at college and one at sea. The DNS course is a one year Diploma.

Medical Entry Requirements

All successful applicants will be required to pass an unrestricted medical examination as approved by DG Shipping or MCA as the case may be. This will be carried out by an approved doctor who needs to be satisfied you are fit and healthy to work at sea. You will also be required to meet role specific eyesight requirements.
