Deck Cadetship

As a Deck Cadet, you would be a vital member of the crew on board a vessel. Performing the role of a Deck Cadet you will be a key member of the ships management working on sophisticated equipments with modern state of the art technology transporting valuable cargo across the world.

It’s a big responsibility. While on duty at sea, it will be down to you to make decisions on steering and maneuvering the ship, controlling navigation and communications. In port, you will be responsible for cargo handling and ships stability.

You will be heavily involved in the day to day safety of the ship. All crew need to work as a team to keep the ship and its equipment at optimum efficiency.

There is diverse role and everyday is different, with your ultimate goal to become the Captain of your own vessel. You’ll be ranked according to your experience and qualifications and with each grade comes more responsibilities. As an officer cadet you will start at the bottom and work your way up.

Captain:

  • Overall charge of the vessel and safety of crew, passengers and cargo. Responsible for legal and commercial matters.

Chief Officer:

  • Day to day management of all deck crew. Overseeing deck operations and maintenance, cargo handling and storage and watch keeping duties.

Second Officer:

  • Responsible for voyage planning and carrying out watch keeping duties.

Third Officer:

  • Responsible for maintenance of life saving equipment and firefighting appliances. Assisting senior officers in day to day operations and carrying out watch keeping duties.

Deck Cadet:

  • Primarily a Trainee Navigational Deck officer who assists and learns hand-on procedures of various job functions on board under the supervision of senior Officers and primarily the Chief Officer. Responsible for all watches and will learn about life saving equipments and fire fighting appliances and voyage planning.

To undertake the Deck Officer course you require a minimum 60% marks in Maths, Physics and Chemistry in your Class XII with English as a subject. The B Sc Nautical Science recognized by the DG shipping or the HNC/D qualification recognized globally and awarded by MCA, UK. comprises of three years of study, two of which is spent at college and one at sea. The DNS course is a one year Diploma.

Medical Entry Requirements

All successful applicants will be required to pass an unrestricted medical examination as approved by DG Shipping or MCA as the case may be. This will be carried out by an approved doctor who needs to be satisfied you are fit and healthy to work at sea. You will also be required to meet role specific eyesight requirements.
